Gear Pump vs Piston Pump for Hot Melt Systems

Hot melt is successfully pumped from melters with both gear and piston pumps. Each pump can be used in a range of applications and each can offer distinct advantages.

For packaging applications where instantaneous output is required the preferred pump is the piston pump. This pump continuously pressurizes the adhesive allowing for fast flow when nozzles are opened and adhesive is applied. Piston pumps can also generate substantially more pressure than the standard gear pump.

In converting applications gear pumps are typically used because they offer a smooth flow of adhesive at lower pressure. Many pumps are used to track line speed and vary the volumetric output automatically.

While most pumps are relatively simple in their operation, typically the gear pump is easier for maintenance personnel to understand and repair.
